Our relaxed photography style will compliment your thoughtful planning. My wife and I will be certain to capture all that is important. Having a wedding photo plan will add to the success of your dream day.

What is Your Wedding Photo Vision?

Wedding couple bask in sunset at the Bark Hut Inn Northern Territory
  • Have you seen a fantastic wedding image? A stylish couple in a classic embrace on the edge of cliff overlooking an epic sunset.
  • On the other hand, do you prefer a candid moment of you both displaying powerful emotions? A moment with smiling guests and the venue in the background.
  • Are family formals high on your list? It is not often the whole family get together, especially if they travelled from afar. Indeed, those photos will most likely be dear to you both forever.

A photo plan is simply gathering your thoughts. Maybe even collect some sample images as examples of what you both like. Photographers are all about giving you what you want. Therefore, we need to know what you want.

What Do You Want Captured?

Ok. You have some ideas. But how do you work out when and where? With our experience photographing weddings, we are able to give some up-front pointers below. These are the things we discuss in detail when we have our face-to-face pre-meet with you both. Whether your wedding is a casual elopement affair or a lavish extravaganza, we can showcase it all, providing we know your plans of course. You can pick and choose ideas from the headings below. We are also open to any other ideas you may have. After all, our “No Fuss” approach is due to our renowned flexible and accommodating nature.

Here’s what a basic wedding timeline will look like:

Getting ready – Get to Know Your Photographer

This is a great time to gain confidence and feel comfortable in front of the camera. Photos at this time will mostly be candid, but fun impromptu group shots can also take place.

Depending on how many people are to be pampered, getting ready could take 1 to 2 hours. Images that compliment you best are made when your make up artist is applying finishing touches. So arrange for your photographer to arrive with time to set up for this. For great images try to have good natural window light or a room with white walls or ceiling. Remember to minimise clutter in the area, too many colours and objects in the background are distracting.

This is also a good time for your photographer to set up any detail shots of rings and bouquets you would like.

First look – Good Opportunity for Uninterrupted Couple Pics

Whilst a “first look” session is not an Aussie tradition it does provide a chance for you to have an emotional couple moment. So consider setting some 15-20 mins aside to get together for a first look before the ceremony. Firstly, it can be a wonderful private moment between you. Secondly, the photographer has more chance to arrange the scene and capture amazing photos. Furthermore, it allows you both to relax into the day and increase your comfort level with your photographer and videographer.

As my wife and I are both photographers, we love the “first look” as it happens during your ceremony. I usually focus on the partner walking in, and my wife concentrates on the partner awaiting with the celebrant. Therefore, we do not miss the moment.

You will love photographs of this moment. Etched in my mind, from our wedding, is when I turned to Carol as she arrived at the alter. I was absolutely blown away by how stunning she looked.

Ceremony- Candid Photographs in a Pre-set Scene

Ceremony photographs show the important things about the day. The legal bonding, with families and guests as witness. Choosing a venue is probably your first consideration. However, whilst a beach scene with soft sand and a blue sea vista can look good, photo wise, it may not be ideal. Bright unshaded sunlight in the territory is hot and makeup suffers with beads of sweat! The harsh light is also likely to create unwanted shadows. Therefore, if you are planning a location wedding, seek a shady area that looks out across a scenic view. For instance, under the large shady trees at Jervois Park with the sea behind.

Another consideration is timing, with a 4:00pm or 5:00pm service at the beach, the sun can still be quite high, but beware of that bright reflection off the water. Guests that face this, when looking towards the couple, will be squinting and putting on their sunglasses.

In this situation you can expect your photographs to have a light background. Those brilliant Arafura sea colours and blue skies will not appear as vivid as they look to our eyes.

However, with less intense sunlight later in the day and some additional lighting directed on the couple, the scenic backdrop can become a stunning part of your

Look up one of the many apps that can give information about the sunset times at your venue on the day. For the best images try to plan the time of service closer to sunset. The light will be less intense, and the colours will be amazing.

Signing the Register-Posed Photographs

During the signing of paperwork, we photographers will move in and get all the candid moments. But it always pays to plan for a few quick posed shots of you both signing and holding the certificate. This is a good idea because your photographer can have some control of lighting. That means that you get superb images and it only takes a few minutes to do. Getting a photograph with your celebrant can be done at the same time too.

Confetti Time-“Lights-Action”

Whether it is petals or bubbles, fantastic action photographs can happen here. Be sure to plan the walk down the aisle, also ensure everyone knows the plan! Photographers need time to move into position from the signing table, they may need to swap lenses. This is a once only action moment and we want to get the best images we can. Your wedding photo plan can help avoid missed shots.

Things we have encountered to be aware of – Bubbles look sooo good, but they blow away really fast in a wind. Guests can unknowingly crowd in with their devices held aloft and block a brilliant shot.

Post Ceremony Hugs & Kisses-Totally Candid

You will enjoy your images taken at this time. We move in with a wider lens and get among the action. Tears, meaningful looks and embraces abound. Nothing more to say, we become invisible and do our thing. Pics from this part of the ceremony will probably turn out to be high on your likes list, these are real moments.

Group Photos-Mustering the Groups

We will pre-plan the best place to perform group photographs at your venue. We always visit the location and scan the surrounds. Even knowing the spot, we always perform a pre scan of the area. In the past we have discovered that something has changed. On the day, we prefer not to have to find a new area to set up the group. Visiting the location as part of our plan minimises any stress on the day.

We will ask if we can have a “Go to” person to help gather families and guests for your planned “group list”. An ad hoc approach is OK on the day but there is the danger that someone misses out. Obviously, we will not know everybody by name.

To get the best shots for you during the family groups session, we offer kind tips. For instance: “Let’s have shorter folk in front”, “Remove sunglasses”, “Remove bulky items from pockets”. Mostly we want to spend enough time to take a few shots of each group, just to make sure we have everybody with open eyes and no strange expressions. You will probably enjoy a fun photograph from each group so get ready to let it out!

Wedding Party Photoshoot-Special Location? Pose Ideas?

Planning a couples or wedding party photo session before your reception is the best time to get some special images. By this time you are probably quite relaxed being in front of our cameras. We do not go in hard with posing instruction, this is not our style. Instead, we create a scene where you are able to interact naturally. Then, we can capture meaningful stories. Remember to include any travel time if you would like to go to a different spot.

If the day seems like too much is going on why not add in another day for a dress up session. We can arrange to meet up another time somewhere scenic to take a few photographs in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Reception-Wedding Couple Entrance

This is a great moment of your day to record photos. To ensure you end up with the best images let your photographers know what you plan to do. Things like the direction you will approach from, and will the wedding party be entering before you. You might also plan a change of outfit before the reception entrance.

Speeches-Candid Moments

Photos of your speeches will show smiles or teary emotions from the speaker and audience. This is a time of candid photographs. A time when we await the moments directly following a funny comment, or when emotions take over.

Cake Cutting

Authenticity is key to create memories that you will always hold dear. So, enjoy yourself and the images will reflect that. Plan the cake cutting and just let your photographer document it for you. You don’t want to remember how the photographer posed you, then made you hold that position for the shot.

First Dance

To remember your day in all its glory, let your photographer stay to capture it all. First dance photos will add more fun to your memories. We like to place flashlights around the dance area. Having several lights placed around allows us to move and shoot in any direction. Again, this is great time to get amongst action to give you great shots of the party atmosphere.

Bouquet Toss

If your photographer knows the plan you can expect great shots of this action scene. Again, we like to use lights from different angles to provide the best pics for you.

Reception-Candid Moments

You can expect photos from the reception to be all interactions, smiles, hugs and funny moments, like a little boy with cake all over his chops. Reception time is totally candid, and everyone is usally more relaxed and comfortable with the photographers moving around. We can set up a flattering soft light in a corner where you and your guests can rock up and have pics taken. The great thing about this is, later in the evening people are fully chill and ready to act up to the camera.

Bride & Groom Exit

Setting up a planned finale guarantees fabulous images. Things the photographers need to know are: What direction you will walk? Will the guests line up to create an avenue? Are you getting into a flash car? If we know the details, we can be sure to capture the best photos as you leave your families and guests to begin your new adventure.

Wedding Photo Plan Wrap Up

As you can see from above, your photographer has to be able to cover varied scenes and lighting challenges. A wedding photo plan will help, as it prepares the photographer. With a wedding photo plan, we can have lighting and lens choice ready. As well, we have worked out where to stand and move to and from without getting in the way. We blend in and become part of your surroundings. When everyone settles into the celebrations of the day photographers become more and more invisible, only popping up when needed.

Small Elopement Registry Weddings

You may look at the above and think. “But we just want a small affair. A quiet wedding at the Registry with a small gathering of friends for a meal after”. Photographer’s will still work with a plan. The wedding photo plan could involve: Setting up lights in the registry office, maybe a few photographs outside with friends. There are some great picturesque spots close to the Darwin Registry Office. You may decide on a short drive to the Esplanade or the beach at Mindil. You may also like the idea of some photographs of family and guests at the restaurant toasting your future together.

We always like to meet our couples before the day to discuss these details. I hope this information helps you think about your overall plan and how to end up with great images of this unique day in your life.
